How to use Eccentric with your Voltra, end to end
Write the program in Eccentric, lift it on your Voltra, bring the measurements back, and read what actually happened. Two ways in — a plain CSV export that needs no setup, or the Beyond+ Cortex API that does it for you — and both end up in the same place. The whole loop, with real screens and real numbers.
The Voltra I measures every rep you do — range of motion, bar speed, power, force, both directions. That data is genuinely good. The problem is you're often not working out only on the Voltra — you're also using barbells, bodyweight, and dumbbells. And that data lives one workout at a time, so it doesn't help you answer the question: is this working?
That's the gap Eccentric fills. What follows is the whole loop, start to finish, shot from my actual training block — a three-day program I call Colorado Voltra, and real sessions out of it.

We designed this initially using just the CSV you can export off the Beyond+ app. Recently, Beyond Power also launched Cortex, which gives us the ability to automatically pull in your workouts. Both options are fully supported. We are also working to leverage Cortex to directly pull data off the Voltra via Eccentric, allowing you to train entirely within Eccentric. 1. Build the workout
Everything lives under Plans. A plan holds workouts (your training days); each workout holds the exercises you'll actually do. New workout adds a day, Add planned set puts an exercise in it.
My plan is three days, split by where the cable is anchored — Low Anchor Day, High Anchor Day, Mid-Anchor Day. That's a Voltra-shaped way to organize a program: you're not walking between machines, you're moving one anchor point.
The part that matters for Voltra owners is the set editor. Pick Voltra I as the equipment and a Mode selector appears, because the trainer does more than one thing — Weight Training, Resistance Band, Damper, Isokinetic, Isometric Testing, Custom Curves, Rowing, Skiing. The fields below change to match.
In Weight Training mode you get Load, plus a row of Load modifiers:
- Eccentric Overload — the
Ecc. mult.field. In the app's own words: extra resistance added on the lowering phase so it's heavier than the lifting phase.1.5×means 50% more load on the way down than on the way up. - Chains — resistance that climbs as you extend, like real chains coming off the floor.
- Inverse chains — the opposite curve: heaviest at the start, easing off as you extend.
Almost every set in my plan runs some eccentric overload — presses and pulls at 1.5×,
rotational and anti-rotation work lower at 1.2×. Reverse Lunges carry 10 kg of chains on
top; Seated Row carries 10 kg of inverse chains.
2. Send it to your Voltra (optional)
You can now walk to the trainer and just run it without using a Beyond+ Session. Alternatively, we can send your workout to Beyond+. Because the ability to build new exercises is currently not supported by Beyond+, you will likely still see some workouts with "Free Exercises" on them. Syncing to your Voltra allows you to not have to key in the weights as you move through the workout.
Connect your Beyond+ account once and Eccentric pushes the whole plan across. In Settings, under Training setup, there's a Connect Beyond Power panel. It wants your Beyond+ Cortex API key, which you request in the Beyond+ app under Cortex beta. Paste it, hit Connect, and it's stored encrypted — the app never shows it back to you. Once it's linked the panel just reports the connection and when it last ran.
With that in place, a Sync to Beyond Power button appears on the Plans page. One tap and every non-empty workout in the plan lands in the Beyond+ app as its own ready-to-run session template, with loads and eccentric settings already set. Pick that template in Beyond+ to run it on your trainer.
Things to know:
- Eccentric overload is translated from a multiplier into an added load. Your
1.5×on 30 kg becomes "30 kg up, plus 15 kg extra coming down" in Beyond+ terms — same outcome, different arithmetic. - Re-syncing replaces what it sent last time rather than piling up duplicates.
3. Train
Nothing to configure. Walk up to the Voltra and lift — either open the session template in Beyond+, or set the machine up by hand. The trainer measures every rep whether or not you ever look at the numbers, and whether or not anything was synced to it.
4. Bring the measurements back
Two ways in, and both are complete — pick whichever you prefer. Everything after this point is identical: the same review screen, the same matcher, the same charts. Both land in the same place.
- Import a CSV. Works out of the box. No account linking, no key, nothing to set up.
- Connect the Cortex API. A one-time setup that then pulls workouts in for you.
Method 1 — import a CSV (no setup at all)
Export the CSV from the Beyond+ app and upload it with Import CSV, reachable from History. You can drop several files in at once, and each one starts or fills in a session.
That's the whole method. If you never connect anything to Eccentric, this path still gives you every screen in the rest of this post. It also carries slightly more than the API does: the export includes the within-rep waveform, so you get the shape of each rep and not just its summary numbers.
Method 2 — connect the Cortex API (set up once, then it's automatic)
If you'd rather not handle files, the Beyond+ Cortex API key from step 2 does two jobs: it sends plans out, and it pulls workouts back.
With it connected, the same import screen grows a Pull from your Voltra panel listing your recent Beyond Power workouts, already guessing which one belongs to the session you're looking at — likely candidates under Possible matches, the rest under Other workouts. Tick one, hit Import, done.
Which to pick? If you want zero setup, or you only import occasionally, use the CSV. If you train on the Voltra regularly and don't want to think about it, spend the two minutes on the key. Neither choice locks you in — you can use both, on the same account, on the same session.
5. Match it up
Here's the thing nobody tells you about smart trainers: your Voltra doesn't necessarily know what exercise you were doing. It knows a set happened — this weight, this many reps, this speed — but "Chest Press" is not a concept it has. Eccentric says as much, right on the screen: your Voltra file doesn't say.
So it asks you once, then does the work. You check off what you did, and the matcher lines each measured set up against each planned set by order, weight and reps — then shows its confidence.
This is the part that makes syncing optional. The matcher never looks for a link back to something Eccentric sent; it compares the shape of what the trainer recorded against the shape of what you planned. A set the trainer logged at 65 kg for 8 reps matches a planned 65 kg × 8 whether that load got there over the wire or because you turned the dial. The statuses:
- Confident — it's sure. Bulk-confirm all of them in one click.
- Verify — plausible but ambiguous. You decide.
- Missing data — you checked it off, the trainer has nothing. Missed, or just unmeasured?
- Off-plan — the trainer recorded something your plan never asked for.
Three ways to work the same review — Ledger as a table, Triage one decision at a time, Merge as a single timeline. Hit Complete review and the session is saved against the exact plan version you ran.
Each session is pinned to the plan version that produced it, so when I change the program next week, last week's session doesn't silently start lying about what it was measured against.
6. Read what happened
Now the data is worth something.
Open a session and every measured set carries the columns the trainer recorded: mean and peak velocity, mean and peak power, range of motion, velocity loss across the set, and a little within-set sparkline.
Click any measured set for the rep-by-rep view: peak force, total work, the eccentric-to-concentric power ratio, the intra-rep waveform, and velocity retention across the set.
Some real numbers. First set of Reverse Lunges, 32 kg for 13 reps: mean concentric velocity 0.19 m/s, peak power 200 W, peak force 38.2 kg, 38.4 seconds under tension, 1,376 J of work. Coming down, peak power hit 326 W. Across the captured reps, the aggregate eccentric-to-concentric peak-power ratio was 2.92×. Across that whole session I absorbed 27,429 J lowering against 22,207 J lifting: 124% eccentric emphasis.
Then Analytics takes it across sessions. Owning a Voltra unlocks a Velocity & power tab: peak power on your top set over time, a load–velocity profile, and a velocity-based 1RM estimate that sits alongside the usual rep-based one rather than replacing it.
Two things worth being straight about here. First, these charts tell you when you have enough data and when you don't — the "need 5+ sessions for a trend" note in that first panel is the product refusing to draw a line through one point. Second, velocity at a fixed load only works if you actually repeat a load. My program adds weight nearly every session, so that particular panel rarely fills in for me; peak power and the load–velocity profile are where I get my read instead.
That read is the real payoff. Same weight moving faster is progress. Same weight moving slower, week after week, is a warning you'd otherwise get about three weeks late.
And then let your AI read it
Everything above lands in one place — planned loads, measured speed and power, the note you typed at 6am. That makes it something an assistant can reason about instead of guessing from memory.
Eccentric connects to Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP-compatible assistant, scoped to your account and limited to exactly what you can do yourself. Once connected you can ask it to read last week and shape next week — "my chest press velocity is dropping across the block, what should I change?" — and it can write those changes back as proposals you accept or decline one at a time.

That's it: plan in Eccentric → (optionally) sync to your Voltra → lift → bring it back by CSV or API → review → read it. The only steps you can't skip are training and importing, and importing takes a file if you want it to. The trainer was always measuring all of this. Now you get to see what it found.
